Today's creature
I am the only truly social cat. My group is built around related females who stay together for life. The males are outsiders who arrive, hold the territory a few years, and are driven out. The females hunt cooperatively, fanning out to surround prey. My roar carries about five kilometres and is a territorial claim. The darker a male's mane, the more attractive he is and the more heat he suffers. Cubs are born with faint spots that fade as they grow. I once ranged across Europe, Africa and Asia, and now hold a fraction of that. A small population survives in one forest in India.
